1 in 5 Australians have some form of disability but only make up 10% of the national workforce. Around 40,000 people identify as having a disability in the Townsville region, many of whom are eager for an opportunity to show their skills.
With the NDIS here and in full swing, more people with disabilities than ever before will be supported to enter the workforce.
Recognising this, CPL is launching a new social enterprise, to provide commercial gardening services to the community while placing people with disabilities into jobs they love.
CPL’s Mylestones Solutions Garden Crew officially launched on Friday 26th August and provides fulltime employment for four individuals.
One of the Mylestones Solutions Garden Crew’s new employees is 20 year old Daniel Hodges, who said he is enjoying his first job since high school.
“I love being outside and I like doing different kinds of things every day. I mean, the work is similar but we work in different places and I am really enjoying it,” he said.
“I’ve got a lot to learn but the crew is really supportive”.
Daniel’s colleague Graham, said that he too is loving the variety of work that comes with the job.
“I love coming into a job and seeing how our hard work can transform some areas. I have a real sense of pride in my work and I love seeing the finished product on everything we do,” Graham explained.
“I have previously worked in customer service, at service stations and also mowing lawns for 30 years. But the work was really inconsistent and you can’t plan for life without consistent work.
“I registered with Mylestones Employment and within a month I had this new job in the Mylestones Solutions Garden Crew. I love the work.”
Angela Tillmanns, CPL CEO, explained that CPL is incredibly passionate about creating real employment opportunities and pathways for people with disabilities while also building better communities.
“With the right support there is no limit to what people with disability can achieve,” she said.
“CPL’s Mylestones Solutions Garden Crew will specialise in commercial garden maintenance and landscaping for commercial businesses right across Townsville, while also keeping three people with disabilities in jobs.
“Employment is such a large part of adult life. At CPL we believe everyone deserves the right to live the life they choose with passion – and for many, this means working in jobs they love within their community.
“We’re now calling on the community to get in touch with the Garden Crew so they can help out with any commercial lawn mowing or landscaping. With the community’s support, we can keep these three hardworking locals in jobs and even look to hire more people,” she said.
