Strathpine’s Lollipops Café is finding employees that work a treat with Mylestones Employment.

1 in 5 Australians have some form of a disability but only make up 10% of the national workforce, as recent ABS data shows.

Yet, 90% of employers who hired someone with a disability say they would do it again, according to a study in the Vocational Evaluation and Work Adjustment Bulletin.

Brittany and Luke

Luke Richters, owner of Strathpine’s Lollipops Café, explained how Mylestones Employment, a Disability Employment Service, based at Strathpine,
provided that support.

“I didn’t have any hesitation when it came to hiring a person with disability, I just wanted to make sure they had the right support,” Mr Richters said.

Ms Wintzlof began as a kitchen hand; making coffees, assisting with food preparation, packing and delivering orders and cleaning tables.

As her confidence has grown, Ms Wintzlof has been given more responsibilities;
training to take orders at the cafe and cooking alongside her co-workers whenever they need an extra hand.

It was the icing on the cake for the young woman, who enjoys every task, and says the job has become like a second home.

“It’s like a massive family; our own little community.

“Everyone joins together, helps each other, it’s really great,” Ms Wintzlof said.

820,000 Queenslanders identify as having a disability, many of whom are eager for an opportunity to work. It’s a figure that Luke it determined to change, and a growing number of businesses are agreeing with him, recognising that a key part of a great business is in diversifying staff.

“Brittany is an asset to our team. All she needed was a bit of extra support in the beginning, all of which Mylestones provided, and now she’s flourishing.

“If any business was thinking about employing a person with disability, I would quite simply say: give it a go, you’ve got nothing to lose. But certainly a lot to gain.”
